I say opportunity, because watching other passengers and what goes on in and around the subway offers an array of ideas for my blog. One passenger stands out in my mind. Anyone whos ridden the subway knows that you rarely get from point A to point B without encountering someone asking for money. Sometimes, its in exchange for some type of entertainment, other times simply because the person is hungry. While sitting and minding my own business, I noticed a man in a wheelchair making his way through the train asking for change. At the other side of the train, another panhandler burst into the car with a loud and boisterous call for assistance. Uh oh, I thought, Dueling panhandlers. What now? The loud newcomer immediately noticed the man in the wheelchair. He stopped calling for a handout and came to sit down next to me. I watched him go through his pockets and pull out all of his change. He counted it. It wasnt much maybe several dollars worth of coins. He sorted and fingered through it as I watched on the sly. He stood up and approached the man in the wheelchair. What now? I thought. I lived in NYC and rode the trains daily for years, but I dont remember ever seeing two people in the same train car asking for money. (Maybe this is a sign of the times and is now commonplace.) I admit that I was pretty surprised to see the man who had carefully counted his change offer a portion to the panhandler in the wheelchair. Here was someone who clearly didnt have much offering part of his take to someone else who may have an even more difficult life. I thought this made an inspiring story for an end-of-the-year career blog. This hasnt been a great year for the economy. Unemployment numbers are higher than ever. Looking for a job is tough and trying work for even the most intrepid job seeker. Stop and take stock: how can you assist someone who needs help even more than you? Ive written to suggest volunteering as a great activity for a job seeker, as it offers networking opportunities as well as a chance to really give back to your community. And with literally billions of active users on the social network, any job there is guaranteed to have far-reaching impact. If you’re looking for a foot in the door, luckily, there’s room. There are over 2,000 open positions at Facebook posted on Glassdoor. The sheer size and growth of the company offer ample opportunities, and in many locations. You’d think Facebook would be bursting with techies. Not so. “We’re always looking for great engineers, designers, data scientists, product managers. Really, in a lot of the technical functions, we’re always looking for more,” says Facebook Vice President of People Lori Goler, who heads up the company’s global HR organization. The competition, unsurprisingly, is stiff. So we asked Goler about the secrets to landing one of those open Facebook jobs, and what kind of candidate the company is most likely to hire. A Desire for ‘Strivers’ The first thing to know is that you need to really want it. Facebook places a premium on striversâ€"the sort of people who relish challenges everywhere they go, rather than back away from them. “We’re really looking for builders, people who will look at the way something works todayâ€"some people may think it works wellâ€"but they will develop a vision for making it better and execute on that,” Goler says. “They’ll get their hands dirty, assemble a team across the company. They really look at things as nothing is ever done or perfect, and there’s always more possibility to do better.” That spirit, she adds, comes right down from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who interacts with staff in weekly QA sessions where employees can ask the billionaire pioneer anything. But thats the kind of change Girl Scouts is impacting in women every single day.March 12 is National Girl Scout Day, commemorating the anniversary of the first Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Georgia in 1912. Today, over 100 years later, the Girl Scouts organization has over 1.5 million girl members and 750,000 adult members working as volunteers. To celebrate the organization that has impacted and informed millions of gi rls, we asked the Fairygodboss team the greatest career lesson they learned as a scout. Instead, I make a point of documenting my s uccesses on a Trello board and use the collection of wins to occasionally pat myself on the back (or to have an easy list to access when Im job hunting).E.
