Top trends in Security Clearance Hiring

Top trends in Security Clearance HiringTop trends in Security Clearance HiringTop trends in Security Clearance HiringIntelligence dug into whos hiring Security Clearance professionals these days. If youre recruiting in this area, youll want to know what we found.A security clearance is a government authorization that allows a rolle to view classified information as a job requires. They are essential to landing a job with a government contractor or federal agency. According to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence about 4.2 million people held security clearances at the end of fiscal 2015. Not surprising, the majority of these were government employees and military personnel. There are three levels of security clearance, which are top-secret, secret and confidential. A clearance is typically good for two years or until the date a review is required, whichever comes first, after a person leaves a security clearance position. Reactivating a lapsed clearance is more likely t o be less costly and faster than gaining a security clearance for a new employee for the first time.To give you some insight into what your recruiting competitors are up to, our Intelligence team analyzed data from the CEB TalentNeuron tool to identify which companies are posting the most Security Clearance jobs and where these jobs are harder to fill. Most In-Demand Security Clearance JobsNetwork and Computer Systems AdministratorsInformation Security AnalystsSoftware Developers, ApplicationsComputer User Support SpecialistsComputer Systems Engineers/ArchitectsSecurity Clearance Jobs44% of available Security Clearance jobs are for TechnologyOf all open technology positions, 48% are specifically for Software Engineers and Information AnalystsWho is hiring Security Clearance talent? Most Common Companies Seeking Security Clearance Talent1Lockheed Martin *ProfileDepartment of Veterans AffairsNorthrop Grumman *ProfileBooz Allen HamiltonCACIGeneral DynamicsBAE SystemsRaytheonCorrect Care Solutions *ProfileHarris CorporationHow difficult is it to recruitSecurity Clearance talent?Security Clearance positions are harder than the average to recruit when compared to all other positions posted online.Which high demand job markets are harder to fill? Here are 10 of the hardest to fill job markets most in demand, some of which may surprise you.1No. 1 Washington DCAvailable Online Jobs 32,800Hiring Difficulty 73zentralwert Ad Salary $132,650No. 2 Colorado Springs, COAvailable Online Jobs 2,100Hiring Difficulty 73zentralwert Ad Salary $88,650No. 3 Baltimore, MDAvailable Online Jobs 8,800Hiring Difficulty 72Median Ad Salary $103,250No. 4 Denver, COAvailable Online Jobs 2,000Hiring Difficulty 65Median Ad Salary $88,850No. 5 San Diego, CAAvailable Online Jobs 2,800Hiring Difficulty 59Median Ad Salary $91,200No. 6 Huntsville, ALAvailable Online Jobs 2,400Hiring Difficulty 56Median Ad Salary $106,150No. 7 Boston, MAAvailable Online Jobs 3,300Hiring Difficulty 55Median Ad Salary $10 5,100No. 8 Norfolk, VAAvailable Online Jobs 2,500Hiring Difficulty 54Median Ad Salary $77,750No. 9 Dallas, TXAvailable Online Jobs 1,700Hiring Difficulty 51Median Ad Salary $88,500No. 10 Los Angeles CAAvailable Online Jobs 3,500Hiring Difficulty 49Median Ad Salary $100,850Want to know more about the top trends in hiring Security Clearance talent? How to give yourself structure when you work from home

How to give yourself structure when you work from homeHow to give yourself structure when you work from homeWhen you work remotely, you gain the flexibility of getting to work from the comfort of your home. But the downside of this situation is the lack of structure. When you work from your bed, its all too easy to let the day slip by hunched over a computer, forgetting to take breaks or eat. To make your remote work successful, you need to build yourself the set schedule and structure of an office into your home. Heres how to do it1) Make your bedTidying up your sheets and fluffing up your pillow may not seem like much, but the simple, mundane act sends a signal to your brain that you are switching into work mode. For William McRaven, a former U.S. Navy Admiral and the 9th Commander of USSOCO, making your bed is the foundation to having a productive day If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride. A nd it will encourage you to do another task, he told graduates at the University of Texas, Austin. By the end of the day, that one task will reinforce the fact that the little things in life matterand if you cant do the little things right, youll never do the big things right.2) Make work boundaries for yourselfCreating healthy boundaries between your personal and professional space is critical to staying focused on your work when the temptations of home surround you. Try working away from your bed that you use for sleeping. Change out of your pajamas and shower, even if no colleague can see you. Find a room with a lock away from your family members intrusions. All of unterstellung are ways you can delineate boundaries between where your work begins and ends.I have a dedicated home office. When Im working, I can shut the door and leave the rest of the house behind,Kira Makagon, executive vice president of innovation at RingCentral, recommends. If youre working from your couch in your pajamas, chances are that youre not in work-mode and wont accomplish what you need to that day,3) Get outsideWhen there are no set hours for how long you should be working, you can end up working too late into the day, which can lead to less sleep and higher chances of burnout. When you work from home, make a point to give yourself the reward of a break so you are not tempted to slack off during blocks of work time. You can make your break more appetizing by giving yourself the gift of fresh air and sunlight and going outside.Walk away from your work space for lunch,Kimber Streams, an editor at Wirecutter, recommends. Even better, go outside If youre bad at noticing that its lunch time, set a calendar event (or an alarm) to notify you that its time to step away.4) Add some hintergrund noiseWhen we work alone in our homes, we lose the comfort of office chatter that research has found actually makes us more productive than total silence. One study found that people working in70-decib el levels of noise, a sound equivalent to the chatter in a caf or your television in the background, significantly outperformed people working in total silence. They were better at generating creative ideas than the groups working in silence. So next time you need to work remotely, try going to a coffee shop or turning on the TV when you need help brainstorming that next idea.

5 Really Stupid Questions from Interviewers

5 Really Stupid Questions from Interviewers5 Stupid Questions from Interviewers5 Really Stupid Questions from InterviewersInterviewers often struggle with what questions to ask job candidates as they try to rapidly understand the skill sets and work styles of applicants they have just met. Its bedrngnis easy to predict someones future job performance in a 45-minute interview. Hiring managers need specific information about the candidates talents, but they often dont know how to conduct aninterview or what to ask. Some interviewers are very skilled and well trained, but the vast majority are not. This results in some fairly creative, yet rather stupid, interview questions.Heres a list of five really stupid questions from interviewers and how you can handle them1.If you could be any type of Muppet character, which one would you be?(Variations of this type of question include What is your favorite color? Favorite TV show? Animal? etc.)The interviewer is under the illusion that he or she can gain insight into your personality by asking a question like this. Whatever your answer is, be koranvers to explain the reasons why you like a particular Muppet, TV show, color, or animal the best. Highlight the qualities that support your answer. Do not leave it up to the interviewer to interpret your answer. Use the question to communicate the talents and qualities you feel best represent your abilities for the position. If you dont have a response, just ask the interviewer the following. Thats an interesting question. Why do you ask? Your intent with this response is to modify the focus of the conversation and steer it back toward things that are relevant to the jobyour experience and talents.2.How many gas stations are in the USA?(Similar question How many airplanes are in the skies over the USA?)The intent of this question is to binnensee how you approach solving a problem, not if you know some obscure bit of trivia. In reality, theres no way to know for certain whether a cal culation is accurate or not.The interviewer is looking to have you think through - aloud - your approach to solving the problem. One approach to solving this problem goes like this To begin, we could look up the total membership list for professional associations of gas station owners. We could also estimate the number of gas stations by researching gasoline sales tax filings for every state.Gas stations are also under the control of the Department of Environmental Protection and most likely have to file an annual report of the condition of this gasoline storage tanks. We could research these figures by state or at the federal level. If you get stuck, just say, as in the question above Thats an interesting question. Why do you ask? While this may help steer the focus of the interview back to your experience and talents, it can also give you a little time to formulate your response.3.Where do you see yourself in five years? This dumb question falls into the same category as What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What would your boss say about you? Even though these questions are frequently asked, it doesnt make them any less irrelevant.Such questions have no value in predicting future job performance. Interviewers really dont want the truth theyre only interested in seeing how you respond. They really want to hear that youre committed to your career, constantly improving your value to the organization and seeking to do an excellent job in whatever role youre assigned. They dont really want to hear about your personal goals or aspirations beyond the open position for which youre being interviewed. Of these five stupid interview questions, this one is the most likely to be asked. And lets face it How many people can see how their lives are going to turn out five years into the future?4.How does your family or partner feel about you working long hours? This question is not only a stupid one to ask, its illegal. It suggests the interviewer is trying to learn whether or not youre married or have a family. This information is irrelevant to the positions qualifications, but the interviewers intent may be simpler He or she may be trying to find out how supportive your family is of your working, or how flexible you can be with long working hours. Regardless, if you hear this question, use your response to communicate your work ethic and flexibility to achieve desired outcomes.5.Why are manhole covers round? This really stupid interview question was made famous by some knuckleheads at Microsoft. They somehow believed that a candidates response indicated something about them. If youd like to blow the interviewers mind, you could approach the problem like a physicist as described on the HEBIG.Org blog, or one of the writers from Seinfeld. You can just hear the bass riff as you read itThe key to answering a stupid interview question is to relate itdirectly to your experience, talents, and anything having to do with the job and working for the orga nization.

The One Word That Can Transform Your Resume

The One Word That Can Transform Your Resume The One Word That Can Transform Your Resume If I told you that one word can change your resume and dramatically improve your job search results, would you think I welches nuts?Let me explain why Im not.One of the keys to a successful resume is to ensure that it clearly communicates your unique value proposition what makes you different from all the other job seekers out there? This value proposition should be the focus of every word of your resume, so that employers cant help but get the message you want them to get.One of my favorite strategies to do this is to distill the clients value proposition into one word (or sometimes one brief phrase). Doing this helps me create a focus for the resume, which in turn helps me choose what content to highlight and what content to leave off the resume all together. How Do You find Your Word?I choose the word or phrase based on two thingsFirst, I define the blend of skills, experiences and personality traits that make my client unique. Then I look at whats important to the companies who are hiring for this type of position and identify what they will MOST like about my client (they may like lots of things but I am looking for the most important aspect of their experience). Then I come up with a word or short phrase that encapsulates that one thing. How it Worked for One Client So to give you a specific example, one former client welches a senior tax executive. He was unusual because he had a breadth of experience that spanned all aspects of taxes from having worked at the IRS, to being a tax lawyer, to working for a top consulting firm providing tax guidance on highly complex issues. He worried that his background was too diversified he was shooting for a position as the top tax executive in a large corporation but he felt that because he had never held such a role before, employers would dismiss him.In reviewing his goals and his experience, I felt that the one key word for him wa s expertise. His broad-based background gave him unique insights and experiences. He hadnt just worked on tax issues for one company, he had worked on them for many companies. He hadnt just viewed them from the inside, but from the outside as a tax attorney and as a consultant. Having decided that expertise was the core concept for his resume, I then focused on gathering the data to support that concept so that we could lead his resume with a strong statement and then support that statement throughout the document. You can see the end result here (opens PDF).This resume got the desired result within 3 months, which is a relatively short time for such a senior-level position. The staff at the Fortune 500 company where Peter now works told him that his resume was the best one they saw and given that its message was so carefully crafted, this is no surprise. In Summary Knowing your one word is a powerful way to transform your resume from a collection of facts into a cohesive marketing d ocument that clearly positions you for success. So whats your one word?Need help with your resume? Is Your Career the Best Factor to Determine Self-Worth

Is Your Career the Best Factor to Determine Self-Worth The University of Phoenix School of Business recently reported the results of a survey showing that almost half (47 percent) of working adults in the U.S. gain equal or greater feelings of self-worth from their jobs and careers as they do from their personal lives. The survey of mora than 1,000 working adults in the U.S. also shows that even though were mucksmuschenstill in tough economic times and have a national 6.1 percent unemployment rate, 60 percent of working adults would quit their job if it decreased their feelings of self-worth. Other survey highlights include-45 percent of workers are still searching for the right career, and more than one-third (37 percent) plan to change careers in the next two years.-Younger workers are the most interested in transition, with 66 percent of workers in their 20s still searching for the right career and 55 percent planning to change careers in the next two years.-The youngest and the oldest working adults are the most likely to quit a job if it decreases their feelings of self-worth, as reported by 69 percent of workers in their 20s and 72 percent of workers age 60 and above.-54 percent of employees surveyed believe that pursuing additional education would increase their feelings of self-worth.A 2013 USA Today article supports the findings of this current study. The article, At Work Job, self-esteem tied tightly together, references a Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index of 100,000 Americans, which revealed that 11.4 percent of unemployed Americans last year were depressed compared to 5.6 percent of those working full time during the survey period. Another 16.6 percent of Americans not in the workforce were depressed at that time.It is possible that there is something about employment that contributes to lower depression rates, or it could be that those who have depression are l ess able to seek out and retain employment, Gallup wrote. The USA Today article quotes a psychotherapist who supported this concept. It readsBeing employed helps you feel wanted and that youre contributing to your finances, says psychotherapist Elizabeth Lombardo. It also gives you social support a buffer against depression. In his practice, psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert sees a lot of unemployed people who are depressed. He describes them as usually feeling hopeless and helpless, their sense of identity greatly diminished.Employment provides a sense of purpose, of belongingness, he says. Those who are unemployed lack that purpose. The article also quotes another psychotherapist, Charles Allen, who believes working and self-esteem are closely aligned. The article readsWhen you have a job, you have a continuous source of feedback that you are a contributing member of society, he says. Thats not to say you go to work thinking, Hey, Im a valued member of society. The idea is largely su bconscious. You feel it in the depths of your brain, he says.Allen notes that this idea of self-worth and career is largely subconscious. Many things in our world play on our subconscious, and ones career is no different.Think about how our society is setup Were told to go to school, get a degree and get a job.Degree=money and opportunities (to make more money)Money=stability, ability to support oneself/familyStable family life=happinessA degree also symbolizes an accomplishment, and there are varying levels of being deemed accomplished in society.A high school graduate is accomplished compared to someone who earned a GED. And a person holding a doctorate degree is held to a higher esteem than one who earned a BA in English. So then we transfer this title and/or accolade definition of success to our careers and self-worth. A job equals hard working, but unemployed equals lazy. And the more distinguished the role, the more distinguished the individual.Dr. Jane Doe is held to a much high er esteem than security guard John Doe, even though both are college educated and employed. Yet, both Jane and John are higher up and/or superior to Jim, Pam, and millions of other unemployed persons, especially those who have been unemployed long-term and receive government assistance.Of course, the above example is just a brief snapshot of our societys hierarchy and not a complete depiction (nor does it represent everyones views) but it does offer one simple explanation of why people define so much of their self-esteem by their occupations. Most of us have been trained to follow these steps for success and these societal standards and definitions of success have been driven into our subconscious since we were little.I say we have to make the decision to define success for ourselves. Not every worker equates his or her self-worth with his or her job. Having a college degree, owning a company or even having millions in the bank are not universal signs of success and accomplishments, although were pushed to believe this.Success is objective, and this holds true for ones occupation. Think about what makes you happy, fulfilled and accomplished as an individual, and then pursue that.Define success for yourself and on your own terms, and dont attach your sense of self-worth to any one thing or personespecially not a job or title that could literally be yours today and someone elses tomorrow.

What Career Should an INFP Choose

What Career Should an INFP ChooseWhat Career Should an INFP ChooseHave you found out that your personality type is INFP (standing for Introversion (I), Intuition (N), Feeling (F), Perception)? Perhaps you learned youre an INFP from a career counselor after he or she administered the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or maybe you determined it yourself after reading about psychiatrist Carl Jungs personality theory. If youve never heard of Carl Jung and his personality theory or the MBTI, heres some background. The MBTI is based on Jungs theory, and it is often used to help people make career-related decisions. Career experts believe that knowing what your personality type is can help you choose a career that suits you and lead you toward the right work environment. In a nutshell, experts use this hilfsmittel to help you learn what your true personality type is and what career will make you happiest. According to the theory behind the MBTI, your personality type is made up of your pre ferences for how you do things, how you feel energized, how you perceive information, how you make decisions, and (in general) how you live your life. Individuals energize through Introversion (I) or Extroversion (E), perceive information through Sensing (S) or Intuition (N), make decisions by Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and live their lives by Judging (J) or Perceiving (P). Jungtheorized that while we each exhibit aspects of both preferences in eachpair, we display one preference mora strongly than the other. The four-letter code assigned to your personality typeis derived by putting together the four letters that correspond to your stronger preferences. Heres a deeper look at what your particular four-letter code means. What Each INFP Letter of Your Personality Type Code Means IYou prefer introversion. In other words, things within yourself, such as your thoughts and ideas, are what energizes you. You tend to be quiet and reserved. This could mean you dont like to risk inter acting enough with others.N You process information using intuition, or insight. You dont have to have physical evidence of something to know it exists. You consider future possibilities and look for patterns in details to see how they affect the big picture. If a new opportunity emerges, you are inclined to take advantage of it. FYour feelings and personal values guide your decisions. If you feel strongly about something, you may not consider the consequences. You are a caring person who is adept at understanding others.P You are flexible and spontaneous, and you tend to take life as it comes. You are curious and you want to be able to explore. This means you arent much of a planner and often deadlines approach more quickly than anticipated- this might leave you rushing to finish projects on time. Its important to realize that these are only your preferences- they arent set in stone. While you may prefer to energize, process information, make decisions or have a particular lifestyl e, you can change how you do things if necessary. In addition, your preferences can change as you mature in life. Consider Your Personality Type When Making Career-Related Decisions Knowing your personality type can help you make career-related decisions including career choices. You should also take your personality type into account when deciding whether a particular work environment is right for you. Working in a high-powered finance job on Wall Street is quite different than working for a non-profit environmental group. Even though all the letters in your code are significant, when it comes to career choice, the middle two letters are the most important. Your middle letters N and F indicate that you should look for occupations that let you develop and implement new ideas. This would let you take advantage of your preference for looking toward the future- and the possibilities that exist there. Because your feelings and values are important, you may be well-suited for a caree r as a psychologist, mental health counselor, librarian, interpreter or translator, dietitian, physical therapist, occupational therapist, teacher, actor, graphic designer, social worker, orwriter and editor. You should consider your preferences for I (introversion) and P (perceiving), especially when evaluating work environments. As someone who experiences motivation from within yourself, you would probably enjoy working independently- perhaps as a freelancer or in a full-time remote job. Be attentive to your need for flexibility and your difficulty with meeting deadlines. If you pick an occupation that is typically oriented toward having to meet constant deadlines (like a media expert or publicist) that would present a challenge for you. Virtual Builds Become Actual Reality

Virtual Builds Become Actual Reality Virtual Builds Become Actual Reality Virtual Builds Become Actual RealityTheres something unnatural about the way people cobble together products and prototypes in the digital age. Building things destined for three dimensions in a two-dimensional medium can make the process needlessly complex and counterintuitive. But if you want an object to exist as a file first, theres currently no other way.Thats about to change. Thanks to the people behind MakeVR, designers, architects, sculptors, and makers of all kinds, will soon be able to get into their objects as never before. The coming onslaught of virtual reality technology isnt just for gamers.MakeVR is, in essence, a program built on a CAD engine that will run on any of the virtually reality platforms soon to hit the market. With it, workers in 3D will be able to submerge themselves in a space where they can work with any conceivable digital tool to build any conceivable element. Using the same kin d of gestures weve all quickly learned on smart screensswiping, zooming, scrollingdesigners of any level of professionalism will cavort around their creations with ease. With either hand you can grab any point in space and move it in any direction, says Steve Hansted, MakeVRs product manager. You can walk yur way through the environment, you can climb a rope with two hands, you can grab, rotate, and scale your environment up or down. Those simple navigation metaphors allow you to very rapidly do whatever you want.Model renderings and 3D printed output. Image SixenseSince its essentially a CAD program, MakeVR comes with all the usual CAD tools, allowing users to work as precise and as detailed as they need tobut with much greater speed. Traditional tools have very steep learning curves, and there are deep menu based items. It takes a long time to learn to use them and once you do youre still relegated to work in the same standard 2D environment, using mouse and keyboard to rotate and navigate, says Hansted. Its not intuitive. With MakeVR you are working at all times in 3D. The learning curve is so much easier, especially if you have no modeling experience. Hansted estimates that, even for experienced modelers, a task like grabbing a cylindrical object and sticking it in a circular hole is nine times faster in MakeVR than it is with a keyboard and mouse. Its so much easier that complete newbies have been able to slide on a pair of VR goggles and start building within minutes. Children that visited one conference and tried MakeVR got to work as if theyd been handed a box of blocks. It was kind of stunning, says Hansted. Young kids are raised on 2D multi-touch. I would just hand them the controllers and stand backthey would just start pushing buttons till something happened. Watching the kids in there, it was frightening, it was just that natural. The first big market likely to adopt MakeVR is3D printing. The printers are priced for, and targeted to, the everymanwho usually doesnt have any skills in CAD. With MakeVR it may take longer for the average Joe to print an object than to build it. But game makers, whose 3D worlds stay digital, are also likely to take to the technology like virtual fish in virtual water.More traditional prototypers are likely to jump in too. With MakeVR, multiple designers and can be working on the same project in the same virtual space. And models can be shared with clients from afar, with every detail, in and out, up for scrutiny. Alterations, of course, can be made on the fly. With VR technology only just now springing on the scene, its hard to know just how big of an impact it will have on the world of design. Once engineers get their heads in VR goggles on a regular basis, the program is sure to evolve to meet their needs. The way things are progressing right now, I cant image whats two years down the road, says Hansted. 10 years down the road Im sure well all have chips in our head.Michael Abrams is an independen t writer.Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEs AM3D Conference Expo For Further DiscussionWith MakeVR you are working at all times in 3D. The learning curve is so much easier, especially if you have no modeling experience.Steve Hansted, product manager, MakeVR

Careers in Sales - Medical Device Sales Professional

Careers in Sales - Medical Device Sales Professional Careers in Sales - Medical Device Sales Professional Take a stroll through any hospital and look at the incredible number and variations of devices you see. During your next doctors office visit, try to count how many medical devices you pass on your walk from the waiting room to the examination room. When youre done counting, realize that every device that you saw, counted, wondered if it is going to be used on you and then questioned about its purpose, came to its location as the result of a sale taking place. And unless people stop getting sick, old or injured, those sales will continue well into the future. 1099 or W2 The number of medical device manufacturers is enormous. Some manufacture just one specific device and some manufacture hundreds of devices. There are those who design, build and sell multimillion-dollar pieces of equipment, and others make medical-grade cotton swabs. The variations are seemingly endless as are the ways their sales professionals earn their income. In general, sales reps who sell medical devices are either independent sales professionals or full-time, W2-receiving employees. For those interested in starting a career in medical device sales, expect to find a fairly even split between those positions that are 1099 based and those that require that you are a company employee. Unless you are only comfortable working with a commission plan that includes a combination of salary and commissions, your main focus should be on finding a company that pays a high percentage of commissions, based on either gross profit or number of devices sold. Manufacturers or Distributors When looking for a sales career in the medical device industry, your search will be focused on either working directly for the manufacturer or a distributor. Both have advantages and benefits, and both have potential drawbacks. Working for a Manufacturer The main benefit of working directly for a medical device manufacturer is pricing. Since the company makes whatever device you are selling, they have the greatest flexibility in pricing. Another advantage is direct name branding. Lets say that you have a job selling MRI machines that are made by XYZ corporation and you are involved in a competitive sales cycle at a large hospital. Your competitor is also selling the same MRI machine, manufactured by your company, but they work for a distributor. Not only will you be able to get more aggressive with pricing support levels, but since you represent the manufacturing company, the decision makers at the hospital will, most likely, feel more comfortable buying from you than from your competitor. There are several disadvantages to consider as well. The main being your limited portfolio of products. Distributors usually have more than one line that they represent, allowing them to match their proposed product to a customers needs better. Working for a Distributor Distributors have arrangements, usually with several manufacturers, to sell their products. Depending on their commitment levels, they receive pricing support levels which allow them to sell the device for a profit. Typical support levels range from 10% to 40% discounted pricing. What this means is that a registered distributor can buy a device from a manufacturer for 10, 20, 30 or 40% less than the published MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price.) Most distributors expect to earn their profit not on the sales of devices but on value-added services. Installation or inventory management are two common value-adds that bring profit to distributors. As a sales rep working for a distributor, you should make sure that you can earn commission on both the sale of the device as well as on any additional services sold. If not, youll need to determine if the market to which you will be selling will support margin levels that are high enough for you to earn the income that you desire. You will also need to determine how many competitors, including the possibility of competing against manufacturer reps, that you will be competing against. Lastly, it is important to understand how many different manufacturers you will be representing and how many different devices you will be able to sell. More is not necessarily better, but more is better than not enough! No matter how many you sell, you need to be the subject matter expert on the device or devices you sell. If you sell a product youre not very familiar with, you probably wont sell many devices!

5 Ways to Cover Your Web Tracks

5 Ways to Cover Your Web Tracks 5 Ways to Cover Your Web Tracks 5 Ways to Cover Your Web Tracks Facebook.LinkedIn. Twitter. YouTube. Recognize those names? They may be little more to you than fun, creative, online forums to voice your personality. But you've heard the warning before: If you want something to be private, don't post it online. In the age of social networking, ignoring that warning can prove disastrous. It's no secret that recruiters and hiring managers use the Internet to filter candidates before they even make initial contact. If you're on the hunt for a new job, take my advice and follow these five tips to cover your own web tracks: 1) Google yourself. We've all done this before. Even out of pure curiosity, we want to know what everyone else in the world will find if they search for our names. Give it a try and see what pops up. If you can't find anything within the first 3 or 4 pages of results, then you're probably in the clear. But if you do spot some relevant links, move on to ... 2) Review your profiles. Typically, the links that show up in your search lead to profiles on social networking sites (such as Facebook and others listed above). Review these profiles to see what others will see if they do the same. Not happy with what you find? Take the necessary steps to a more professional profile and ... 3) Remove embarrassing pictures and content. The best part about social networking is the ability to express yourself and connect with friends when it's convenient. But when you're looking for a new job and interested recruiters can easily view your profile, clean it up a bit by wiping out any pictures of yourself half-naked, wrestling in a pit of mud and beer (well, you get the idea). If it's not professional, it could skew the professionalism you're trying to project to future employers. Also, make sure that nothing you have on your profile contradicts the qualifications and skills you put on your resume. If you claim to have excellent communication skills, don't let your About Me description show otherwise with misspelled words and sloppy sentences. Don't want to dismantle your online personality to such a degree? Then simply ... 4) Change your privacy settings. Every networking site has user-changeable privacy settings, and if you've never played with them before, now's the time. If you did a web search for my name right now, you'd discover that I'm an author on something called The Blog and that I have a Facebook account. I don't want to give the world access to every Facebook detail about me when they click on that link, so I tailored my profile to show only what I'm comfortable with. To do the same, just find the settings that control your public profile and tweak them until it (a) no longer shows up in a web search, or (b) displays only what you want the world to see. But remember, the web is not always something you can control, so just try to ... 5) Relax. If you've exhausted your efforts and just can't fix or remove your own web tracks, consider this: If an employer fails to consider you for a position based solely on your social networking profiles, you probably don't want to work for them anyway.

5 Tips to Help Raise your Efficiency

5 Tips to Help Raise your Efficiency 5 Tips to Help Raise your Efficiency With a ton of work. comes great responsibility (I guess Ive already heard this before). Dont let the work stress you, dont let it steal all of your time. If you have trouble to keep up with a lot of tasks, this list may be helpful for you. Know your priorities It may be hard to assemble your priorities sometimes. The most important tasks are not always those with deadline around the corner. To know your priorities you have to find your goals at first. You can use this advice in both private and professional life. 20-80 This ratio is known as Pareto principle. It says: 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Basically, 80% of success (work done) is achieved by 20% of effort. Dont do any unnecessary work to achieve those remaining 20% with 80% effort. It consumes a lot of precious time. You can use the time for different, much more important tasks. Have a plan Create a calendar with all your tasks. There is a lot of neat online tools to do that. Dont try to do more, than you can handle in one day. Actually, put an emergency time after every task. Maybe there will be traffic jam, or some other time killer during the day. The hardest part is to follow your plan. Sometimes you will force yourself to keep up, but in the end, you will be thankful for doing so. Trust us! Reserve time for your work ONLY Once you learn how to plan your day, its a good idea to reserve a couple of hours dedicated to your work only. Dont let anyone to interrupt you. Once you step on the working flow, it is done almost with no effort. The worst thing is, when someone constantly interrupts you, and you can not stay focused. Relax Being a workaholic kills your creativity, energy and enthusiasm for work. Know when your work is over and have a nice relax with your friends or family. There is nothing better for your career, than coming back to work fresh. Do you like this story? Share it with your friends. Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

The myth of the average employee

The myth of the average employee The myth of the average employee Wise leaders don’t compare people to the norm?- ?they know the average is a  myth. The US Air Force had an unsettling problem back in 1952.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!It had the best pilots and the best planes anyone could dream of. But the results were terrible. The higher ranks blamed the pilots. Then, technology. Lastly, they turned the instructors into scapegoats. But it turned out that none of those was the problem?- ?the answer was in the cockpit. For a fighter pilot, the difference between failure and success are split seconds. The right fit between the pilot and the cockpit is a life or death issue.Having the most sophisticated instruments is useless if pilots can’t reach them when they need them the most. For a long time, the assumption was “design for the average pilot.”That almost made sense. If you design something fit for the average sized person, it sho uld fit almost everyone. The myth of the average is that it fits most people, when, in fact, it excludes everyone. This assumption, argues Harvard scientist Todd Rose, is spectacularly wrong. As he explains in his  TEDx talk, we need to  ban the concept of average. For a high-school dropout who made it to Harvard, Rose understands what it is to be a square peg?- ?better than anyone else. The Myth of the  AverageHistorically, scientists believed that statistical averages could help us solve for individual problems. Most organizations design their culture, hiring processes, and reward systems with one person in mind: the average employee.Gilbert Daniels proved to the Air Force commanders how wrong?- ?and expensive?- ?this myth was.The Air Force researcher approached the problem with obsessive dedication. He studied over 4,000 pilots and measured them on ten dimensions of size.Daniels wanted to answer a straightforward question: how many pilots are average on all ten dimensions? The evidence was conclusive:  zero. There is no such thing as an average pilot.Daniels found that each pilot has a  jagged size profile?- ?no one is the same on every dimension. Being the tallest person doesn’t mean you are the heaviest. Or that you have the broadest shoulders or the longest torso. The Myth of Average is the flawed belief that we can use statistical averages to understand individuals.Average-based yardsticks like academic GPAs, personality tests, and annual performance reviews are deceiving. We are comparing people to a fictitious standard.Fortunately, scientists have debunked this myth.Todd Rose’s advice is simple, yet powerful: ban the notion of average. It’s not helping get the best out of people.Ban the Average  EmployeeThis phrase comes from the Air Force. After Daniels’ findings, “Ban the Average” was coined as a declaration of freedom?- ?to stop designing for the mythical average person.Aviation manufacturers resisted the challenge. Everyone thought it would be i mpossible to achieve?- ?and expensive.Time proved everybody wrong. That’s how adjustable seats were born. The solution was designing a cockpit that could adapt to the pilot?- ?and not the other way around.Banning the average is not a gimmick?- ?but a statement to challenge mediocrity.Designing for extreme users uncovers unexpected solutions. Forget the average?- ?make sure both the tallest and smallest pilots fit.The Air Force dramatically expanded its talent pool. Many good pilots were initially rejected because they didn’t fit the average selection criteria.Does your organization adapt? Or is it designed for the ‘average’ employee?Design Your Organization to the  EdgesThinking in terms of average, not only is deceiving but dangerous. When we collapse all the complexities of a person into one-dimensional terms, we end putting people in a box.1. Design to the  edgesMost organizational cultures are designed for the average employee. They favor extroverts over quiet people. They reward conformists  over rebels. And are much more tolerant with high-performers than the rest. It’s not that one is better than the other?- ?organizations need both. They should hire for  cultural fitness, not just cultural fit.Creativity is a byproduct of diversity of thought.Research shows that the talent pool of a company is not equally distributed. It’s better represented by a  long-tail  rather than the familiar Bell Curve. To build an extraordinary, high-performing culture design to the edges.2. Ditch Performance ReviewsAnnual performance reviews are not working.More and more organizations are ditching them. Formal reviews are not only are a waste of time and money?- ?they have turned feedback into torture,  not a gift.Performance reviews are a standardized approach to evaluating people.Deloitte found that giving someone a number?- ?1 to 5?- ?is pointless. Trying to describe an employee’s performance into one single number limits their potential.People, like pilots, have a jagged profile. They are good at something, and not so proficient at others. When you try to reduce talent to a single score, you amplify their weaknesses and silence  their superpowers.Getting a score to describe one’s performance is both meaningless and dehumanizing. It upsets people?- ?they become defensive rather than willing to give their best.3. Flexible approach to  workThe one-size-fits-all approach is not working.Take the open-plan offices, for example. They are now considered the  dumbest management fad.As research by Harvard shows, they have neither improved productivity nor collaboration. The problem is not the open plan but the one-size-fits-all approach. Some tasks require collaboration, others deep work. Certain employees thrive brainstorming outloud, others need privacy and time to reflect. The office space must be both flexible and adaptive. The same happens with the high-top desks. Standing up for eight hours can be as bad as sitting down the entire day?- ?the ans wer lies in the balance.Banning average means adapting to the specific situation and employee’s needs. For example, a recent study by PayScale shows that, for women, flexibility is more important  than money.Personalized medicine holds the future for medicine?- ?the workplace should embrace the same path.4. Past behavior doesn’t predict future performanceThe ability to learn new skills is more important than formal education. Self-aware CEOs deliver better results than those with an MBA.Many companies?- ?including Apple and Google?- ?no longer  require a college degree as part of their recruitment process.IBM, for example, is looking for candidates who have hands-on experience.Google’s research demonstrated that GPA, SAT, and the prestige of one’s alma mater could not predict success. The point is not dismissing the value of formal education. But rather to encourage hiring managers to open their minds.Traditional recruitment filters are no longer sufficient to predict the fut ure. By trying to minimize risks, we could end making dangerous decisions?- ?average ones.Don’t hire people for who they are, but for who they could become.5. Culture versus subculturesThe average myth makes managers expect their teams to behave similarly.Every team has its way of doing things. That’s why collaboration is hard?- ?even between teams from the same organization. No one wants to share their  secret sauce.People like to belong to tribes?- ?the smaller the group, the stronger the affiliation.Encourage subcultures rather than neutralize them. It’s easier to increase belonging and alignment within a team.Shaping and celebrating subcultures increases engagement.Change happens from within, as I tell my clients. Transforming an organization requires changing one team at-a-time.These are exciting times. We all know how the future will look like, but few understand how to get there. We do whatever it takes to get the right talent?- ?people with the right skillsets to thrive in the 21st century.I’m sorry to disappoint you, but that talent doesn’t exist?- ?you need to develop it.Look inside, rather than outside. Focus on nurturing your people?- ?help them become their best version.Ban the average. Instead of overpaying the best people, invest in liberating everyone’s hidden talents.Gustavo Razzetti is a change instigator who builds cultures to  push your organization forward?- ?not backward. He advises, writes, and speaks on team development and culture transformation. This article first appeared on Medium.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

New Year, New Job Search Guide

New Year, New Job Search Guide New Year, New Job Search Guide In the first few months of a new year, there’s often a feeling of hope, newfound aspirations, and perhaps reflection about how you’re spending each day. If you found yourself in a career rut in 2017, it’s likely that one of your 2018 goals is to find a better position and one that offers you flexibility to live your life more fully. To begin your search for a new career path and work flexibility, we’ve devised a step-by-step job search guide to set you on your way. Follow this job search guide as the path to your flexible work career: 1. Create a specific plan for success. The first step to your new career is to drill down to your area of interest and write down your goals. What does your ideal career look like? Realistically determine the career that best suits your skills and experience and then factor in the type of work flexibility that’s needed to give you work-life balance. Take a career quiz to help you with your career change plan and consider meeting with a career coach. Keep honing these goals to get to the root of your ideal career. Be as specific as you can and then write down ways that you can better achieve that career. Is more education required? Would an online class or two refresh your skills? Would learning a complementary skill better prepare you for the road ahead? When you take a class or learn a new skill, be sure to add that to your resume to show that you’re growing and interested in learning. Begin your search with . Use the advanced search tool to select potential jobs based on your area of interest, location, desired flexibility, career level, and other refining categories. Through this search, record the education and skills needed for the jobs that interest you most to determine if you need to obtain more education or skills for your ideal career. 2. Tailor your resume. Especially if you’ve been in your current career for some time, take out your resume and dust it off. Read through it carefully and then edit it in stages. First, review your resume for any necessary updates that should be included and add those details. Next, sharpen the language used to describe each position and be sure your newly obtained education and skills are included. Lastly, ask an HR connection to review your resume for holes, unnecessary lingo, and for suggestions for improvement. Tweak your resume to align with each job to which you’re applying for better matching potential. When applying for flexible work positions, include the qualities you have that lend themselves well for this type of work, such as self-motivation, organization, and accountability. 3. Write a sharp, succinct cover letter. Review your last cover letter used and revise it. Use heightened language and sharpen the text to make your cover letter succinct and engaging. Again, ask your HR connection to review the cover letter and offer suggestions for improvement. Take the extra time to tweak your cover letter to suit each position just like you’ve done with your resume. 4. Prepare your references. Meet with or email each reference you wish to list and explain to them your career goals so they understand the importance of their reference and so their language will align with your skills and your desire to succeed in a flexible work arrangement. When applying for flexwork options, ask your reference to describe why you would be good at working from home to better solidify your chance to land an interview. 5. Refresh your online image. Use a discerning eye and peruse your social media outlets from an HR perspective. Delete posts or tweets about volatile or political issues. Add posts and tweets about professionalism or your career interests. Consider building a website that features your skills, goals, and career path and add that information to your resume and cover letter. 6. Brush up your networking and interviewing skills. If it’s been some time since your last interview or if you communicate better on paper than you do in person, brush up on your networking and interviewing skills. Practice responses to common interview questions, attend local business gatherings to hone your networking skills, and develop an “elevator speech” that describes your skills in a brief introduction when meeting a new connection. 7. Understand the applicant tracking system. An often-overlooked part of a job search guide is advising job seekers to understand how HR departments utilize an applicant tracking system. Companies that experience heavy application volume often use applicant tracking systems to weed out applicants who are an immediate wrong fit or lack the required experience. Learn more about this system by reading “5 Ways to Stand Out in an Applicant Tracking System.” Best of luck on your search! Browse Open Flexible Jobs

Tony Awards nominees share their success secrets with us

Tony Awards nominees share their success secrets with us Tony Awards nominees share their success secrets with us There’s no business like show business, and to be able to find success in the Broadway world is an accomplishment in itself.  Hundreds of actors, directors, set designers, choreographers and more make their way to The Big Apple each year with the hope of scoring a lead in a hit Broadway show.  Their ultimate goal: to one day win a nomination for the  Tony Awards, which celebrates Broadway’s stars. While the awards are in June, the nominations came out on May 3 and we at Ladders were there to talk with the brightest stars. As tough as it is to make it onto the Great White Way, you will find that these people have struggles that can be relatable in any other type of industry, it’s all about your determination and learning along the way that can get you to the point of success that you want.  At today’s “Meet the Nominees” event, I spoke with several nominees about their best success tips that led them to the 2017 Tony Awards.  Star: Sally FieldTony Nomination: Best Perfo rmance by a Leading Actress in a Play, “The Glass Menagerie”Success secret: “You know, when young actors ask me about having a career and how you do that, and how you keep going, there isn’t any real answer except to want it more than you thought you would ever have to want it.  It has to be something you do because you can’t not do it, because to not do it, is that you have like lobbed off a limb or something.  It doesn’t feel quite alive, without it, because it has to be a constant and driving means inside of you.”  Star: Josh Groban Tony Nomination: Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, “Natasha, Pierce The Great Comet of 1812”Success secret: “I would say it is always important to challenge yourself and it is also important to find things that keep you a little bit scared in a healthy way.  Whenever you have a bit of success, which I was lucky to have early on, the bar is suddenly raised.  You have more “yes” people around you than you’ ve ever had, and that can be dangerous. “I think it’s important to try to look at things objectively, to trust your own gut and your own meter for what’s good and what isn’t.  I think that, for me, I always try to keep with ‘Is this something that is going to be inspiring to me?’ The show was certainly that for me.  Ultimately, we are all human so I think that picking things and choosing work that truly makes you feel something quite good and special are extremely important.  Also, always be nice to people because you never know when they are going to be your boss.”Star: Laurie Metcalf Tony Nomination: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play, “A Doll’s House, Part Two”Success secret: “I would say work with people who are really great, because it makes you better. Including great directors and playwrights.  This was just a wonderful stew of all of that, and the wonderful hand that Scott Rubin plays in it also, so it was like an A-Team was part of why I wanted to join and also I was thrilled at the audacity of the title of the play.  I was like, ‘Oh I got to read this to see what he is bringing in his script here!'”Star: Eva Noblezada Tony Nomination: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, “Miss Saigon”Success secret: “I would say to anyone my age, that age does not define you.  I’ve heard it all before, you know, ‘Oh, I’m shocked at how mature you are for your age [21],’  and it’s like, well, there’s people half my age that are very mature.  I want to tell everyone, especially students who are aspiring to be actors and actresses, that because that it still me, I’m still very young and aspiring to be better and trying to be a sponge and soak everything up.  One thing would be to not to compare yourself to anyone else, it is the quickest way to fail, and you will never be able to find your own individual potential if you keep looking at somebody else’s.  Trust me, I know, I’ve fallen for it and it didn’t work.  Also, speak lovingly to yourself and make sure you are taking care of yourself and as much as I love giving and my time to people I love I have to remember that self-care is so important.  You can’t do a role like this, you can’t do theatre where you are giving so much to thousands of people a night if you don’t give an hour to yourself a day”.Star: Alex Lacamoire Tony Nomination: Best Orchestration, “Dear Evan Hansen”Success secret: “When I write, I feel like I know when I’m done.  Meaning, you try stuff and eventually you end up with ‘OK, I want to choose that,’ because it could be A, it could be B, it could be whatever it is, but you never know until you make a decision that you are going to go with C.  Ã¢€œBut, how do you know what that is?  How do you know when that is?  I think it is just a natural feeling, so I would say it is gut, it is instinct, and going with what feels right and natural.  If you are working too hard at something, it is probably not the right choice.  Sometimes, you have to go through the eye of the needle to arrive at something beautiful, but you have to go all around the tree to see the tree for what it is.  I would say just keep at it, know when you’ve done your best, know when you can do better, and if you can do better, just keep working.” Star: Brandon Uranowitz Tony Nomination: Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical,  FalsettosSuccess secret: “I think just be completely unafraid to be you, in everything that you do whether it is in the audition room, whether it is here in front of you guys, or it is on stage.  It took me such a long time to be comfortable in my own skin and to not take the rejection personally, but once I found myself and who I am, my work started getting more confident and more solid.  That really happened right before “An American in Paris”, and then “An American in Paris” sort of boosted all of that for me.  Ã¢€œ So, learning to love yourself and be confident with what you bring to the table, because only you can do what you do and only I can do what I do.”
